Have you ever experienced a "spike-and-crash" from eating processed junk foods or sweets? You eat something and have a surge of energy, only to quickly crash into malaise and feel hungry once again. Repeating this cycle of spiking and crashing not only makes you feel generally yucky, but also packs on pounds fast.
Part of the reason that low-carb diets work is because they address this Spike-and-crash mentality. By eliminating the simple carbohydrates that cause massive spikes, low-carb diets stabilize blood sugar levels – which can improve energy, reduce hunger, and kick the body into fat-burning mode.
When you eat something like a snacky cake or a big bowl of pasta, you are really taking in concentrated energy in the form of simple carbohydrates. Your body responds with an excessive amount of the hormone insulin, which helps transform carbohydrates into glucose (which the body uses for fuel). When energy demands are met, insulin then stores excess glucose as – you guessed it – fat. This overzealous insulin response works frantically to disperse all the incoming glucose from your carb-laden treat . . . and ends up overdoing it, leaving us with low blood sugar once again. Hence, the familiar post-carb-frenzy cravings for more sugar and carbohydrates.
This dangerous vicious spike-and-crash cycle can spell disaster for both weight management and overall well-being. The good news, however, is that there are plenty of sensible dietary choices and nutritional supplements that help stabilize blood sugar . . . so you can lose weight, conquer cravings, and feel great! Stay tuned, I’ll be detailing many of these blood sugar stabilizers . . .
