Real sustainable skin care - Alaffia

With the wave of skin care brands scrambling to out do each other with claims of "organic", natural, and green, it's refreshing to discover a company that's truly committed to making a difference.

Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care is using shea butter product sales to make a difference in the cycle of poverty in Africa and "to preserve indigenous resources and knowledge for future generations."

Alaffia shea butter productWhat constitutes sustainable products?

Alaffia appears to be setting the benchmark by adopting these practices:

1. Using Sustainably Harvested, Wildcrafted, and Traditionally Extracted, Unrefined Shea Butter for the base of our products.

2. Providing fair wages and prices to our Shea Butter Cooperative members and farmers.

3. Dedicating 10% of sales proceeds to Community Enhancement Projects in Africa and other parts of the World.

What initially caught our attention is that Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care has collected more than 2,000 used bicycles in the US, which Alaffia will in turn send to Togo, West Africa.  The bikes will be distributed to disadvantaged students, mainly girls. Alaffia’s Bicycles for Education program is designed to encourage rural youth to stay in school by providing transportation to students who walk up to 10 miles a day to attend school.

I love these products but they do need to get the types of containers they use straightened out. I've had to return pump items because the contents were too thick to be used in a pump. And now I have the Virgin Coconut Hydrating Lotion, which I love but it too thick for me to get it out of the bottom third of the bottle no matter how hard I squeeze it. Very frustating as I love these products.
