Overweight and Resveratrol Equals Better Health

Not sure you caught the report that red wine contains a life extending compound called resveratrol.  Some scientists call the resultsfat mice live longer with resveratrol "spectacular".  This is good news for those of us who have packed on extra pounds.

The research: mice on high fat, high calorie diets that were given resveratrol showed significantly improved survival rates vs. fat mice that didn't get the compound.
Caveat: I was listening to NPR where a doctor at the University of Washington warned that the results are preliminary, and that the concentration of resveratrol was extreme.  You would need to consume over 750 bottles of wine to get the same levels of resveratrol used in the longer lasting mice.

Resveratrol supplements:  I found a few companies that offer supplements containing resveratrol.  The jury is out if supplements can deliver the same benefits seen in mice.  Resveratrol quickly passes through your body, so it's not known whether mega-dosing on it can help.

FWIW, I found these resveratrol supplements at VitaCost.com; didn't see alternatives at GNC or drugstore.com
