Gastric Bypass Safer than Ever, and Other Beauty News
RealSelf's roundup of the latest news in the trades and papers:
1. Gastric bypass surgery goes BOLDly where it hasn't been before
Gastric bypass and gastric-band surgery for weight loss has become significantly safer in recent years -- it's no more risky than any other common abdominal or GI procedure. A new database -- the Bariatric Outcomes Longitudinal Database (BOLD) -- will keep track of patient info and outcomes. Good news: complication rates from bariatric procedures dropped 21% from 2002-06. [Time]
2. When 34B+34E+34D+30D equals "a terrible mistake."
Brit fashion journalist Christa d'Souza recounts, as she puts it, "the sad ballad of my bosoms" in excruciating (terrifying, really) detail. Her journey through breast augmentation wends from a "fried egg" 34B to 34E and, eventually, to 30D. Now, after breast cancer, she's thinking of trading down to being flat-chested again. Unbelievable. [Daily Mail]
3. Twiggy? 'Memba her? She's back -- for Olay
The original superpixie, Twiggy, is returning to modelling, this time (at the age of 60!) for Olay Definity in the UK. Twiggs did a campaign for the beauty brand 25 years ago, when it was called Oil of Ulay. (Yes, with a U.) [Guardian]
4. "Cankles" -- ugh -- is fastest-growing aesthetic affliction
The intellectual giants at Gold's Gym have decided to appeal to your basest fears by proclaiming disproportionate weight gain between the calf and the ankle (we just can't say it again) the biggest aesthetic problem today. Gold's claims they've surpassed "muffin tops" and "saddlebags" already -- all as a (very mildly) amusing way to get you to sign up. [Brandweek]
