“Give me ten minutes a day,and I’ll make your skin look ten years younger.”

This is skin care guru Dr. Brandt’s tagline for his new book 10 Minutes/10 Years: Your definitive Guide to a Beautiful & Youthful Appearance, which hits shelves today. Beauty tips Dr. Brandt offers include:

  • Get sugar out of your diet to achieve optimal skin from the inside-out
  • Advice about which cosmetic procedures and skin treatments are the least intrusive and most cost effective.
  • A breakdown of which products on the market actually live up to their anti-aging claims is also part of the guide.

The book sounds like a winner to me because Dr. Brandt actually instructs and educates readers, by explaining how products and procedures work and whether or not you should opt for them based on your skin type and desires for certain results.

I put one of Dr. Brandt’s 10 minute tips to achieving skin that looks 10 years younger to the test. He says:

“Set a timer for 10 minutes when you’re craving something sweet and see if the craving passes. Chances are, it will.”

I was skeptical about this tip, but I put it to the test last night. I was looking forward to a bowl of strawberry ice cream drenched in hot fudge (should have had a skinny cow), and I managed to overcome the craving by putting it off. We’ll see if this mind trick will continue to work. I doubt it!

As a woman with not only a sweet tooth, but several sweet teeth, I am fascinated by Dr. Brandt’s theory that sugar in one’s diet is one of the main factor’s that leads to the aging of skin. In this book he explains that a process called “glycation, a natural process where sugar molecules in the cells stick to protein fibers, binding them together causes the fibers to become dry and brittle...In other words, sugar breaks down the collagen and binds to the elastin, causing them to harden. As a result, skin loses its elasticity and becomes more vulnerable to wrinkling, sagging and UV damage.”

Who knew a bag of my beloved peanut M&M's could actually be causing my fine lines?
