I learned that salicylic acid works by dissolving dead skin cells (keratin). Since dead skin cells that block pores cause acne (including white heads and black heads), dissolving those dead skin cells is a great way to _prevent_ breakouts.

2% salicylic acid doesn't work quickly -- it took a few weeks of twice daily use before it started to clear up the white heads that I get on my forehead. But it was gentle enough on my sensitive skin that I could use it as my primary cleanser.
