The Keys Company Line:
"Chemical free skin health." Keys Soap believes that over 50% of skin disorders are misdiagnosed and are actually caused by chemicals in skin care and household products, so the Keys line is formulated for people with skin disorders, sensitive skin and post cancer recovery.
The Bottom Line:
The story of Keys Soap makes zero sense--at first. There's two successful executives--one from Silicon Valley (who was dubbed the "Imagineer of Silicon Valley" in the press) and one a VP at Coca-Cola. Not much in common with the skincare biz, until they found each other. Bob Root and Wendy Steele met by chance in New Mexico and began a long-distance romance. But it was Wendy's diagnosis of skin cancer (melanoma) that put things into perspective. Not only did Bob and Wendy realize that they both wanted to leave the corporate world, but Bob also wanted to do something to help ease the discomfort Wendy experienced with traditional skincare products after she recovered from her cancer--her skin became increasingly sensitive, dry and flaky. Research (and according to Bob, his passion for Creole cooking) became the tipping point that would lead to the development of the Keys Soap line. One of the discoveries Bob claims aided in the formulation of sensitive-skin-friendly skincare was that many traditional skincare products--even dermatologist-recommended ones--contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), which can be a skin irritant. So all Keys Soap products are SLS-free, in addition to being "chemical-free and 100% vegan, with no artificial color or fragrances" plus, "all products are hand crafted to contribute to therapeutic skin health". All Keys products are natural and are listed on Keys labels (as shown at right for Keys' MetaCare).

Bob Root and Wendy Steele believe their life-altering love story is filled with life lessons for all of us--so much so that they penned a book together: Defining Moments.
