Get smoother skin and improved skin texture

Improving your skin texture is certainly a matter of trial-and-error, experimenting with products or treatments that can give you smooth, even skin texture. What's right for you depends on numerous factors:

  • skin type
  • skin tone
  • degree of skin damage
  • your budget
  • how much time you want to spend on skin care.

Note that if you have a sudden change in your skin texture, go right away to a dermatologist. Sometimes these changes could correlate with skin cancer.

Home treatment options for skin texture improvement

  • Natural skin care products like soy based Aveeno Total Soy Complex or Positively Radiant may improve your skin tone and texture without having to go down the path of lasers or chemical peels. Additionally, most high quality wrinkle creams contain antioxidants or other ingredients that improve texture.
  • Gentle exfoliation is important to remove dead skin cells that create the dry, dull skin texture you hope to avoid. Scrubbing is not the answer. Exfoliate with a mild product that you apply with your finger tips. You can also try a home microdermabrasion kit which simulates the exfoliation and skin polishing you get at a spa.Skin Texture Guide - IPL_17.jpg
  • Estrogen, typically increased through birth control pills like Ortho Tri-Cyclen can improve your skin texture, particularly if you have adult acne. Estrogen helps clear your skin of acne.
  • Makeup base often works great at evening out skin texture. Some bases are gels like MAC Prep + Prime that contain silicone, which easily smooth across your face.

Professional skin care treatments for skin texture

Facial fillers

Injections like hyaluronic acid or collagen assist with filling in wrinkles as well as acne scars. Botox works on facial lines by freezing muscles. Hence, Botox is not a great option for skin texture problems. Popular hyaluronic acid injections that can improve your skin include wrinkle treatments like Juvederm and Restylane.

Some recent product introductions in the skin care filler market cost a bit more, but last longer. For instance, Radiesse contains tiny calcium particles similar to bone minerals. Sculptra fills wrinkles and stimulates new collagen growth with a synthetic polymer.

Skin resurfacing

Removing the top layer of skin often is all you need to get great skin texture. Problems such as acne scars, depressions, or dry skin can literally get sanded or peeled away. Skin resurfacing treatments include lasers, dermabrasion, and chemical peels.  If you want just a mild exfoliation, you may want to consider a microdermabrasion treatment.

Light treatment or intense light therapy

IPL, which stands for intense pulsed light treaments like Fotofacial are non-invasive procedures that may improve sun damaged skin. Light treatments work best on fine-to-medium depth wrinkles.
