Excimer laser Guide

The XTRAC excimer laser is used by cosmetic dermatologists for laser skin resurfacing (see laser skin resurfacing reviews on RealSelf) to treat a number of skin disorders and skin problems including vitiligo, Rosacea, Psoriasis, stretch marks and white scars.

Like Phototherapy, XTRAC emits ultraviolet light B (UVB) waves that penetrate the skin and decrease the abnormally rapid growth of skin cells associated with psoriasis. The XTRAC excimer laser promotes re-pigmentation in those who have lost pigment in their skin or have aged white stretch marks. The increase in melanin (pigment) results in a darkening of the white stretch marks, which closely matches the natural color of the surrounding skin.

The XTRAC excimer laser treatment also improves chronic stable plaque psoriasis. People with psoriasis often experience relief in just 6-to-10 sessions-compared to 25-to-30 treatments with conventional phototherapy. Remissions are expected to last months. To begin, you may need two treatments per week for 4-to-6 weeks.

Excimer laser GuideOn the first visit, your physician will test your skin to determine your optimum light dosage level. A hand-piece is moved over the affected area, applying a focused beam of light through a fiber-optic delivery system. The XTRAC laser emits a narrow band of ultraviolet B light which promotes re-pigmentation in vitiligo, white stretch marks and improves chronic stable plaque psoriasis.

There are some benefits to using lasers: they are non-invasive procedures with a lower risk of infection, they are relatively "bloodless" surgeries, and they reduce potential of scarring and can be less painful. XTRAC is an out-patient procedure.

Complications of the XTRAC excimer laser include -but are not limited to- blisters, hypo pigmentation, and a sunburn-like skin reaction.
