Acupuncture facial treatment

The trend to get a acupuncture facial treatment has hit Hollywood and spas from around the world. The buzz: the ancient art of acupuncture gives you a virtual face-lift. Many providers claim that acupuncture is an effective anti-aging treatment; so much so it replaces the need for plastic surgery. We're not so sure about this claim, since a facelift involves significant facial modification, including removing excess skin.

Acupuncture background

Acupuncture is an ancient Asian therapy that involves the insertion of fine needles into your skin. Medical researchers believe that acupuncture is effective at treating pain conditions such as back pain. The needles are thought to stimulate endorphins and other nervous system responses in the body, thereby triggering healing powers. Chinese traditional medicine regards acupuncture as an essential means of bringing balance to the body through the transmission of "qi", the vital energy that flows through the body along "meridians".

Does Acupuncture face-lift work?

As far as the effectiveness of acupuncture face-lift, research suggests that the treatment can give you tighter and smoother skin. However, the dramatic effects seen after a surgical face-lift is not a reasonable outcome from acupuncture treatment. It is unlikely acupuncture facelift will reduce all wrinkles. Supplemental treatments that stimulate the body to grow new surface skin like chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, or microdermabrasion may be necessary.
