Popular Acne Treatment Alternatives

If you have adult acne, the good news is that you have many viable acne treatment options. Listed below are some of the more popular acne treatments:

Chemical peel

The exfoliation you get from a chemical peel often reduces the appearance of acne, especially acne scars. A spa or dermatologist will likely recommend a Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) or salicylic peel for this purpose. The downside: recovery time is required, which means avoiding sun exposure for a week or more.

Acupuncture face-lift

Many Hollywood beauties, like Diane Lane, believe you can get clear, smooth skin from acupuncture.  Acupuncture facelift involves massage, needles, and often tuning forks.

Light therapy

If you're willing to incur some pain both physical and to your wallet, then you should consider light treatment. Light treatments are seen as a new weapon against acne. Light therapies are really no more than short sessions where your skin gets exposed to quick blasts of intense light that's administered by a dermatologist or aesthetician using special equipment. Each color of light emitted by these devices is believed to have unique properties. Red light is reported to stimulate collagen growth, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles; blue light kills acne bacteria; amber light is used to help alleviate pain.

An acne light treatment called BLU-U delivers concentrated blue light to zap acne bacteria. Revitalight may be more effective than other systems: it works on multiple frequencies, preventing the skin from becoming desensitized to the treatment. Photodynamic therapy is a fancy dermatologist way of saying, intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment. You may have heard of IPL as an effective hair removal treatment. The IPL treatment is said to work well for treating moderate-to-severe acne as well.

MSM

Research shows that MSM (technically called methylsulfonylmethane, which is sulfur that occurs naturally in your body) may be used to get rid of acne and other skin conditions. MSM supplements can also give your hair a brighter sheen.

Natural skin care products

Natural skin care products can help reduce outbreaks. For instance, jojoba oil is mostly used as a non-comedogenic (doesn't clog pores) moisturizer, it is also a cleanser and effective anti-bacterial that helps with acne.

Prescription drugs

If your acne persists despite your best efforts, perhaps a visit to the dermatologist is in order. He or she may prescribe antibiotics to eradicate bacteria or Retin-A or Accutane, both of which are good at getting rid of acne. Accutane is controversial due to studies that link it to birth defects, so again, go see a doctor to determine whether it's the right treatment for you.
