What are Silskin Silicone Injections?

SilSkin silicone injection is a facial filler that contains purified silicone oil. SilSkin is currently being reviewed by the U.S. FDA for cosmetic use in the treatment of wrinkles and skin depressions. A similar product called Silskin 1000 is approved in the U.S. for treating patients with "retinal detachment" such as HIV patients with facial wasting syndrome.

Silskin is a liquid silicone. If too much silicone is used, you can get silicone oil migration and potentially bumpy looking skin. These bumps or granulomas, can give you ulcers, redness, intermittent or permanent swelling. Remember that the safety of silicone remains under investigation.

For now, other facial fillers such as Juvederm (see Juvederm injection reviews and tips), fat injections or Botox alternatives can be used to fill in sunken facial features, wrinkles, or to augment lips.

Invariably, silicone has a highly unpredictable safety profile. In clinical practice, even medical grade silicone can cause serious deformity that is debilitating. Patients contemplating silicone should be aware of the potential serious complications associated with the use of these products, off label, for facial augmentation. In my practice, I see countless patients with silicone deformities. These patients have had their lives and careers seriously damaged by this facial filler.
