Turkey neck

Becauseof the resemblance it bears to a turkey gobbler, a condition of excess skin and fat that has accumulated below the chin is often referred to as a 'turkey neck.' Most people would prefer to have a tightly contoured jaw and neck line, so various cosmetic procedures have been used to correct a turkey neck.

Turkey neck causes

As we get older a number of factors can change the contour of the neck and jaw line, including weight fluctuations, weakening of the supporting structures, and loss of skin elasticity.

The chin may carry too much fat, there can be looseness of the platysma muscle with fat underneath it, or there can be problems with the angles the chin makes in relation to the face, especially if the chin is weak.

Turkey neck treatment

Things to consider when looking to correct a turkey neck include the following:

  • Amount of fat

  • Quality of skin

  • Skin laxity

  • Position of the platysma muscle

The main way to improve a turkey neck through neck lift surgery along with a lower facelift.

Liposuction is a minimally invasive technique to slim down the neck and tighten the skin as well.

Chin augmentation (using chin implants) can help create a greater disparity between your face, chin and neck region, to improve the angles of your jawline.

Other less invasive options may attempt to add volume to the lower face, pulling the loose tissues up toward the area underneath the chin and creating a 'covering effect' for the contents below the jawline.
