PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) can occur as the result of trauma to the skin-- including trauma from cosmetic procedures. PIH can also appear following an acne outbreak or skin lesion.

Symptoms of PIH

With PIH, skin becomes discolored and PIH can appear as red, purple or brown marks on the skin; for darker skin tones, PIH can appear to be a deep brown or black color.

Cause of PIH

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is caused by the overproduction of melanin (the protein that gives your skin pigmentation) and it is the skin's response to skin irritation or trauma.

Cosmetic Treatment for PIH

PIH can sometimes be treated with skin resurfacing techniques such as chemical peel or laser treatment.
