Mommy makeover

A mommy makeover is a marketing term for a series of cosmetic surgery procedures meant to modify a woman's body after undergoing pregnancy.  Pregnancy is usually associated with weight fluctuations and stretching of the tummy leading to stretch marks, the dreaded "pooch", droopy, deflated breasts, fat deposits on the hips and lower back.

A mommy makeover, or a "mom job" typically removes extra skin, stretch marks, and undesirable sagging. The makeover can include a breast lift with or without implants, tummy tuck, liposuction and at times, a thigh lift.

Mommy makeovers cost in the range of $30,000 to $50,000, depending upon the number of procedures performed.

Mommy makeover controversy

Not everyone thinks cosmetic surgery that targets new mothers is appropriate.  This was captured in a New York Times article, “Is the Mom Job Really Necessary,” which weighed in by stating that the mom job sets “unforgiving standards” and,

“…treats biological changes as if they were as optional as hair color. Gossip magazines excoriate celebrity moms who don’t immediately lose their “baby weight.”

Regardless of this commentary, plastic surgeons on RealSelf have reported high demand for mommy makeovers.
